Craigslist Personals Alternatives in 2026: DoubleList, Locanto, Bedpage & W4M Maps Compared
Craigslist killed its US personals section on March 22, 2018, the day after the Senate passed FOSTA-SESTA. Two weeks later, on April 6th, federal authorities seized Backpage, and the indictment against its founders that came out a few days after that ran to 93 counts. Just like that, the two places most American adults went for personals and adult classifieds were gone inside a single spring. I'd used Craigslist personals since my twenties, and I spent the next few years trying pretty much every replacement anybody mentioned to me. Almost eight years on, people still type "Craigslist personals alternative" into Google every day. This is what actually filled the gap, what each option does well, where each one falls apart, and where I'd spend an evening now.
Why Craigslist Personals Died in the First Place
FOSTA-SESTA is two bills stitched together. The House passed its version, H.R. 1865, in February 2018. The Senate passed it 97 to 2 on March 21, 2018, and President Trump signed it on April 11. In plain terms it took away part of the Section 230 shield for websites, so a site could be held liable, criminally and in civil court, for user posts that promote or facilitate prostitution or sex trafficking. You can read the bill itself on Congress.gov's page for H.R. 1865 if you've got a free afternoon and a strong coffee.
Craigslist didn't wait for the signature. Their FOSTA notice is still up, and it's about four sentences long. Any tool or service can be misused, they wrote, and they couldn't take that risk without jeopardizing all their other services, so they had "regretfully" taken personals offline. They said they hoped to bring them back some day. I've reread that page more times than I'd admit to a date.
Backpage was a separate story that happened to land the same month. The case against it had been building for years, and the seizure on April 6 wasn't really a FOSTA action. The timing just made it feel like one event.
The damage spread well past adult ads. Casual encounters, regular w4m and m4w posts, strictly platonic, missed connections, all of it went the same night. That's the hole every Craigslist personals alternative and backpage alternative has been trying to fill since. A few do it reasonably well. Most don't. (The longer history, including the 2010 adult services shutdown that started the rot, is in what happened to Craigslist personals.)
Where Everybody Went, According to People Who Actually Counted
My own experience is one guy refreshing pages in Ohio and Illinois, so I went looking for somebody who'd measured it properly. The best source I found is a June 2021 report from the Government Accountability Office, GAO-21-385, which Congress required as part of FOSTA. It's about the commercial sex market, not dating, but the pattern it describes is the same one I watched happen to ordinary personals.
Two things jumped out at me. First, the GAO found that after the Backpage seizure and FOSTA in April 2018, a lot of the people running these platforms moved them overseas, and the market "became fragmented," with users spreading out across many smaller sites. Second, it found that federal prosecutors had used FOSTA's new criminal charge exactly once, in a case brought in June 2020, mostly because they'd been doing fine with older laws.
Fragmented is the right word for personals too. In 2017 I had one bookmark. By 2019 I had nine, and none of them were as good as the one I'd lost. When a single giant board breaks into dozens of small ones, every small one has thinner local traffic, and the operators running them from another country have less reason to care who's posting in your town. That's the root of almost every complaint I have about the clones below.
Meanwhile the apps kept growing. Pew Research's 2023 key findings on online dating put the share of US adults who have ever used a dating site or app at 30 percent, and 53 percent for adults under 30. So the crowd didn't stop looking for each other. It just stopped looking in one place.
How I Judged Every Site on This List
Before the rundown, here's the test I use, because "best alternative" means nothing unless you say best at what. I ask five questions about any personals site.
Who posts first? On old Craigslist w4m, the woman wrote the post and men answered. That one detail filtered for intent better than any algorithm. A site where men do all the outreach is a different product, even if it calls itself personals.
How local is local? A neighborhood or at least a real city in the listing beats a vague "nearby." I want to know if she's twenty minutes away or two hours.
Does anybody check who's real? Email confirmation doesn't count. Phone confirmation slows spammers down for about a week.
Where does the money come from? If men pay per message, the site makes money when men keep messaging, whether or not anyone answers. That isn't automatically shady, but it's worth knowing.
How bad is the first hour? My worked example: I make a fresh account, browse w4m in a mid-sized city I know, and count how many of the first twenty listings look like real local women versus copy-paste text, borrowed photos, or a push to some other site. On the best boards I've tried, most of the twenty pass. On the worst, I've had evenings where I couldn't confidently find two. That one-hour test tells me more than any review.
DoubleList: The Direct Craigslist Personals Clone
DoubleList is the site most people mean when they say "the new Craigslist personals," and it picked up most of its crowd in the months after the shutdown. The design is deliberately Craigslist-nostalgic: sparse header, text-heavy listings, the same category codes (w4m, m4w, mw4w, t4m), the same regional setup by US metro. The first time I opened it, it felt like walking into my old kitchen after somebody rearranged the cabinets.
What it does well: The category and city structure is faithful to what Craigslist personals looked like. Browsing and posting basic listings doesn't cost anything. Traffic is decent in big metros like New York, LA, Chicago, Houston, Miami and Dallas.
Where it falls apart: There's no serious identity check, so anybody can put up a post in a couple of minutes, which is exactly what made late Craigslist so hard to use. In my own tries, a big share of the replies to a new m4w post, and a lot of the w4m posts themselves, turned out to be redirects to Telegram or WhatsApp, content sellers, or the same text pasted across several cities. You can find real people there. You'll just sort through a lot of noise first. If you're new to this, read the spotting fake profiles guide before you try DoubleList so you know what you're looking at.
Locanto Personals: The International Adult Classifieds Board
Locanto has been around since 2006 as a general classifieds site. Jobs, apartments, used stuff, and personals as one section among many. It's global, with traffic across the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, India and South Africa, and the personals section has been one of the busier ones since 2018.
What it does well: Huge geographic footprint and a big city-level directory. Basic listings don't cost anything to post. In most major metros you'll see new w4m listings most days of the week.
Where it falls apart: Fakes are common in the women seeking men and casual sections, especially profiles that push you toward a paid site. Verification is light. In smaller cities the ratio of real users to junk gets rough. Locanto works if you're patient and know how to filter. It's less good if you want to message someone tonight. My fuller take is in the Locanto personals review.
Bedpage: The Familiar Backpage-Style Board
Bedpage showed up in 2018, around the time Backpage was seized, and it was built for the people who missed that format. The layout and the metro-by-metro structure will feel familiar to anyone who used Backpage for years.
What it does well: If Backpage was your habit, there's almost no learning curve. The category structure is broad, posting is simple, and the city pages cover a lot of the country. It's a working classifieds board that a lot of former Backpage users still rely on.
What to know going in: Bedpage is a general adult classifieds site rather than a dating directory built only around w4m listings. That's a different job. If what you specifically want is women seeking men in a casual dating sense, pick your categories carefully and read listings closely so you're answering the kind of post you actually meant to answer. If you used Backpage mostly for its dating section, my Backpage personals alternatives piece goes deeper.
Kijiji Personals (Canada Only)
Kijiji is the classifieds site eBay built for Canada, and for a while its personals section caught some of the Craigslist overflow in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary and Ottawa. Kijiji has since closed its personals too, so the Canadian traffic scattered to other boards. I only mention it because people still search for it, and there's no sign of a revival.
Tinder, Bumble, Hinge (Swipe Apps)
Half the guys who search "Craigslist personals alternative" try Tinder first, because it's the app everyone downloads first. Swipe apps are the default answer because they're marketed the hardest. They're not a direct replacement for w4m personals, and I say that as somebody who has paid for more than one of them.
What they do well: Big user base, decent moderation on the most obvious bots, and a polished mobile experience.
Where they fall apart: Intent is a mystery. A match tells you nothing about whether she wants to meet this weekend, next month, or never. You figure it out by grinding through conversations, most of which die after three messages. I once kept a note on my phone for a month of Tinder: 41 matches, 11 conversations that got past hello, 2 dates. For casual stuff specifically, that's worse than what a decent personals board would have given me in 2008. There's more on this in local dating apps vs traditional dating sites.
Reddit r/r4r and City-Specific Subreddits
r/r4r (Redditor for Redditor) is Reddit's general personals subreddit, and most big cities have their own r4r version. Worth knowing: Reddit banned several sex-related subreddits within hours of the Senate's FOSTA vote in March 2018, but it left the r4r boards alone, which is why so many ex-Craigslist people ended up there.
What it does well: No cost. Community-run, so each sub's culture matters, and the strict ones (photo checks, mod-approved posts, age brackets like r/r4r30plus) are genuinely usable.
Where it falls apart: Your username and post history are visible to anyone who clicks, so discretion means a separate throwaway account. Response rates for men writing to women are brutal. There's no map and no real location filter beyond what people type in titles. The Reddit r4r personals guide covers how to use it without wrecking your privacy.
Adult Friend Finder, Ashley Madison, and Their Cohort
These predate the Craigslist shutdown and aim at somewhat different crowds. AFF is a paid casual site. Ashley Madison was built for people in relationships looking for affairs. Both charge for meaningful messaging. Ashley Madison had its user data leaked in 2015, and the reporting afterward raised serious questions about how many of the women's profiles were active real people. Both have had years to clean up since, but any paid model gives a site a reason to make the room look fuller than it is. Go in knowing that.
W4M Maps: How We Fit In
Full disclosure: you're reading this on W4M Maps, and I'm one of the people behind it, so weigh what follows accordingly. Here's what we do differently from the options above.
Verification. Every woman who lists herself on the site is verified with a government ID check and a live video call with a real person before her listing goes up. It's slower than letting anyone post, and it means fewer listings. It also means the woman you're reading about showed her face and her ID to get there, which after years of replying to bots is the whole reason I wanted to build this.
State and city browsing. You pick your state, then your city, the same way you used to pick your Craigslist city. Nobody ninety minutes away pretending to be nearby.
The w4m direction. Women list themselves and say what they're looking for. Men read and reach out if it fits. That's the part of old Craigslist personals that actually worked, and we kept it on purpose. If the shorthand is new to you, w4m personals explained covers it.
Focus. It's a directory of women seeking men. No jobs board, no used cars, no fifteen other sections fighting for the page.
Where we're weaker: Because of the verification step, we'll never have the raw listing count of an open board. Smaller markets have fewer listings, honestly. In a big state like Texas or California you'll have plenty to read. In a town of thirty thousand you may need to widen to the next city over or check back next week.
The Honest Rankings for Different Use Cases
If you want verified w4m listings from real women: W4M Maps. It's what we built the whole thing around, and yes, I'm biased.
If you want maximum volume and don't mind heavy filtering: DoubleList first, Locanto second. Both reward patience and knowing what a fake listing looks like.
If you liked the Backpage format: Bedpage is the familiar choice, and the backpage guide linked above has more detail.
If you want a swipe app for casual dating: Tinder or Hinge, in that order. Bumble's women-message-first rule makes it slower for anything hookup-adjacent.
If you already live on Reddit: r4r subs in bigger cities work reasonably well with a throwaway account.
If you don't mind paying for an established brand: Adult Friend Finder, as long as you go in clear-eyed about how paid sites pad their numbers.
Questions I Get Asked About Craigslist Personals Alternatives
Is Craigslist personals coming back? Not as far as anybody can tell. The FOSTA notice is still on Craigslist's site, the law is still on the books, and a federal appeals court upheld it in 2023. I wrote about the rumors and the copycats in the new Craigslist personals.
What's the closest thing to the old Craigslist personals? For the look, DoubleList. For the part that actually mattered, real local women posting what they want, I'd point you at a site that checks who's real, which is why we built ours that way.
What replaced casual encounters specifically? No one site. The crowd split between clones, Reddit and hookup apps. I go through it in my history of Craigslist casual encounters.
Are sites like Craigslist personals legal to use? Using a personals site to meet another consenting adult is a different thing from what FOSTA targets, which is promoting or facilitating prostitution and sex trafficking. The law put the pressure on the websites, which is why the sites changed and the users mostly just moved.
How do I avoid fakes on any of these? Watch for replies in under a minute, anyone asking you to "verify" on another site, photos that look like a magazine shoot, and posts with nothing local in them. Meet in public the first time. The basics are in staying safe meeting women online.
Where the Space is Going
FOSTA-SESTA isn't going anywhere. A constitutional challenge, Woodhull Freedom Foundation v. United States, ran from 2018 until the D.C. Circuit upheld the law in July 2023. So wide-open, anonymous, Craigslist-style personals aren't coming back in the US. Any serious new site has to either invest in checking who's real, which is expensive and slow, or find some legally airtight way to stay open without it. Nobody I know of has cracked the second one.
The other trend is specialization. Old Craigslist was one giant board for everything. The sites that work now tend to do one thing for one crowd: w4m only, kink only, one region, one age group. A narrow focus makes moderation possible in a way a giant general board never managed, and moderation is what decides whether a personals site is usable or overrun inside a year.
If I Had One Evening to Spend
Every Craigslist personals alternative in 2026 makes a different tradeoff. DoubleList keeps the old look and the old fake-post problem. Locanto spreads wide and asks for patience. Bedpage gives Backpage regulars a familiar home. Reddit trades privacy for community. Swipe apps have scale but hide intent. Paid platforms have a reason to make the room look fuller than it is.
If it were my Friday night, I'd spend it reading listings from women who'd already been checked, in my own state, written in their own words. That's the version of Craigslist personals I actually miss, and it's what we built W4M Maps to be. Pick your state below and see what's there.
