F4M Meaning: What F4M Stands For on Reddit and Personals Sites

F4M means female for male: a woman posting because she wants to meet a man. That's the whole definition, and if that's all you came for, you're done. But if you've just started reading personals on Reddit or one of the newer boards, the tag is only the first thing that'll confuse you. There are brackets, ages, hashtags, and a whole set of signals in the way an F4M post is written that tell you whether it's real, what she actually wants, and whether replying is worth your evening. I've been reading and answering these posts since the Craigslist days, so here's the version I'd give a friend.

F4M in one sentence

F4M stands for "female for male." The letter before the 4 is the person posting, and the letter after the 4 is who she's hoping to hear from. So an F4M post is written by a woman and aimed at men. It says nothing on its own about what kind of meeting she wants. That could be a date, a hookup, a friends-with-benefits arrangement, someone to go to a concert with, or just a chat. You find that out from the title and the body, not the tag.

The format works for every combination, which is why it stuck. M4F is a man looking for a woman. F4F is a woman looking for a woman. M4M is a man looking for a man. Couples get their own letters too: MF4M is a male and female couple looking for a man, MF4F is a couple looking for a woman. If you want the full list, including T4M, A4A and the rest, the personals abbreviations guide covers every one.

F4M vs W4M: is there a difference?

In meaning, no. F4M and W4M both describe a woman looking for a man. The difference is where you'll see each one, and it comes down to history.

W4M ("women for men") was the label Craigslist used for its personals categories. For almost two decades, if you were browsing personals in the US, you clicked into "w4m" and that was that. It's why the term still dominates on classifieds-style sites and why this site is called what it's called. When Craigslist shut its personals down in March 2018, the vocabulary moved with the people. We wrote up what happened to Craigslist personals separately if you want the full story.

F4M ("female for male") is what took over on Reddit. The big personals subreddits settled on M and F, probably because "female" and "male" read as more neutral and fit the shorthand style of the site. If you're on r/r4r, a city R4R board, or one of the hookup subreddits, you'll see F4M far more often than W4M. On a map or directory site, you'll see W4M. Same thing, different neighborhoods.

Practically, it means you should search for both. If you only type "w4m" you'll miss most of Reddit, and if you only type "f4m" you'll miss most classifieds boards.

How to read a full F4M post title

On Reddit, an F4M title usually follows a fixed pattern because the subreddits enforce it. A typical one looks like this:

29 [F4M] #Denver - Looking for a Saturday drinks partner who actually shows up

Here's how to break it down:

  • 29 is her age. Most personals subreddits require it as the first thing in the title.
  • [F4M] is the tag: she's a woman looking for a man. Square brackets are the standard, and many subreddits remove posts that leave them out.
  • #Denver is the location, written with a hash so people can search it. Some posts use a state, a region, or "#Online" if she isn't looking to meet in person.
  • The rest is her headline, and it's the most useful part. It tells you what she wants and how she wants to be approached.

Some boards add more. You'll see things like "[F4M] #NYC #Brooklyn" for a borough, or "[F4M] #Online #Chat" for someone who only wants conversation. The rules vary by subreddit, so it's worth reading the pinned post in any board before you reply. My Reddit R4R guide goes through which boards are worth your time and how each one handles tags.

What she's actually saying in the rest of the post

The F4M tag tells you who she wants to hear from. Everything else tells you whether that's you. After enough years of reading these, I sort them into a few rough types, and the wording gives most of them away.

Hookup posts usually say so directly, or use the shorthand: NSA (no strings attached), ONS (one-night stand), "tonight", "hosting" or "can't host". If you're not sure what one of those means in practice, the NSA meaning guide explains the difference between NSA, FWB and a one-night thing, because they aren't the same.

FWB posts talk about something regular: "ongoing", "a few times a month", "someone consistent". She isn't after a one-off. Answering an FWB post as if it were a one-night offer is one of the most common ways guys get ignored.

Dating posts mention getting to know someone, shared interests, or "seeing where it goes". She may be open to something physical eventually, but if your first message is about that, you've misread the room.

Activity posts are about a specific plan: a show, a hike, a wedding plus-one, someone to try a restaurant with. These get far fewer replies than hookup posts and are often the easiest to get a yes on, because almost nobody answers them properly.

The rule I follow: reply to what she wrote, not to the tag. Quote a detail from her post. Answer any question she asked. If she listed requirements, show her you meet them without making her ask. That alone puts you ahead of most of the replies she's going to get. There's more on this in the guide to messaging women online.

Why so many F4M posts aren't what they look like

Here's the uncomfortable part. Every guy who's spent time on Reddit personals learns it eventually. F4M posts get flooded with replies, often dozens in the first hour. That attention is exactly why scammers and spammers fake them. A fake F4M post is the cheapest way there is to collect a pile of men's usernames, emails and phone numbers.

The fakes tend to follow a few patterns:

  • The redirect. She'll only talk on Snapchat, Telegram or Kik, and she wants to move there in the first message. Once you do, it turns into a pitch for paid content or a "verification" link.
  • The verification scam. She's interested, but first she needs you to "prove you're not a cop" or "verify you're safe" by signing up for something or buying a gift card. No real woman needs your credit card to meet you. Ever.
  • The copy-paste post. The exact same title appears in five different city subreddits on the same day. Search a distinctive phrase from the post and you'll often find it.
  • The brand-new account. Created yesterday, no other activity, and the profile links somewhere. Real people have post history, even if it's about video games or recipes.
  • The too-perfect offer. Hosting tonight, no requirements, wants to meet right now, and she's replying to you before you've said anything specific. Real people are a little more cautious than that.

None of this means every F4M post is fake. Plenty are real women who use Reddit because it's anonymous and free. But you need to screen every one, and the screening takes time. We put together a longer checklist on spotting fake personals profiles. It covers the newer scams too, including the AI-generated photo profiles that have shown up over the last couple of years.

Should you post an M4F instead?

You can, and some guys do well with it, but go in with realistic expectations. On almost every personals board, men's posts far outnumber women's, and women reading M4F posts are spoilt for choice. An M4F post that gets replies is specific, a little funny, honest about what you want, and clearly written by a real adult with a life. The generic "29M, fit, discreet, hmu" posts sink without a trace.

If you go that route, the guide to writing a personal ad covers headlines, length, photos and the phrases that make women scroll straight past. The short version: write the post you'd want to read if you were her.

Where to find real F4M and W4M posts now

Where you look depends on what you're willing to put up with.

Reddit is free, anonymous and has real users, but it's unmoderated in the way that matters to you: nobody checks that the woman behind an F4M post exists. Expect to filter a lot.

Classifieds sites like DoubleList and Locanto use W4M-style categories and feel the most like old Craigslist. They also inherited Craigslist's spam problem. We reviewed DoubleList and Locanto in detail if you want to know what you're walking into.

Verified directories are the third option, and it's the one we built. On W4M Maps every woman listed has gone through an ID check and a live video call before her listing goes up, and listings are organized by state and city. It doesn't make every conversation turn into a meeting. Nothing does that. What it removes is the first and most exhausting job on Reddit: working out whether she's real.

Quick answers

What does F4M mean? Female for male. A woman posting to meet a man.

What does M4F mean? Male for female. The reverse: a man posting to meet a woman.

Is F4M the same as W4M? Yes. W4M is the older Craigslist-era label and F4M is the one Reddit uses. They mean the same thing.

Does F4M mean she wants a hookup? No. The tag only says who she wants to meet. Read the post to find out whether she wants a date, a hookup, FWB or just company.

What does the number before [F4M] mean? It's her age. Most personals subreddits require the age first, then the tag in square brackets, then a hashtag with the location.

Why does a woman's F4M post ask me to verify something? Because it's almost certainly a scam. Real women don't need your card, a gift card or a signup on some third-party site to meet you.

Real women for men, already verified

On W4M Maps every woman listed has passed an ID check and a live video call, so the F4M question of whether she's real is settled before you message. Pick your state to start.
